i have a 80Gb HD, DVD-rom and a DVD-RW

how should i set them up on my DIE channel???

some plp say HD+DVD-RW on ide1 and DVD-rom ide2 and some plp telling me , HD
alone and DVD-RW\Rom on second ide.
its getting really confusion

oh also the HD is backup only since i run my OS on a RAID0 setup

It depends on how you use your computer. The thing to keep in mind is
that only one drive per channel can be accessed at the same time. For
instance, if you did a lot of on the fly copying from your DVD-rom to
your DVD-RW, and you wanted to do it as fast as possible, then it would
be best to put them on separate channels. Because you have your OS on a
separate RAID controller (very smart planning) your choices are going to
be a lot easier.
 
well i dont really do on the fly copy

i use shrink DVD so it rip movies from DVD-rom to the HD and then burned
with the DBD-RW

just if i put the DVD-RW on IDE1 and i want to burn something off the HD
will it affect the speed??
 
When you put a harddrive and an optical drive on the same IDE channel, the
harddrive can only run as fast as the much slower ATA speed optical drive.
Put the harddrive BY ITSELF on IDE 1, and the DVD's on IDE 2. You'll be
happy.
 
This has been debated for years and years ago it was true. Not since ATA33
has it been true though. If you put a ATA100 drive on master (for instance)
and a ATA33 drive on slave the ATA100 drive will operate at 100 and the
ata33 drive will operate at 33. Same if the 100 was a slave and the 33 was
a master. It makes no difference at all. Plug them all in any way you
want.

I believe Dave is technically correct when referring to mixing optical
(ATAPI) drives with hard drives on the same channel, but not because
they are necessarily different speeds but because they use different
command structures.

"Hard Disk and ATAPI Device Channel Sharing: There are several reasons
why optical drives (or other ATAPI devices) should not be shared on the
same channel as a fast hard disk. ATAPI allows the use of the same
physical channels as IDE/ATA, but it is not the same protocol; ATAPI
uses a much more complicated command structure. Optical are also
generally much slower devices than hard disks, so they can slow a hard
disk down when sharing a channel."

What I believe you are referring to is the implementation of Bus
Mastering. A slower IDE device (not ATAPI device) will not cause a
faster IDE device on the same channel to default to the slower speed
since the advent of independent device timing common on harddisk
controller chipsets since 1995 provided the hard drive is not pio 0
(very old).

With that being said, there a lot of people who swear that they share CD
and hard drives on the same channel without dragging down performance,
regardless of the command structure differences. Bottom line is if you
can keep them separate it is always best if for no other reason then
allowing simultaneous access. Otherwise, bench mark the performance
before and after to see the effect by using something like HD Tach.
