Greetings

I put a new unformatted 2.5" IDE Dive in an external
firewire housing unit. The unit does not plug/play. I
reboot to a command prompt to execute "diskpart" to do a
rescan and it does not show up on the device list.

Additionally, it hangs a normal reboot or shutdown when it
is attached.

How do I get XP to recognize the new drive? How do I then
partition and format it?

TIA,
Steve

Hi, Steve!
You might want to try and mount it as internal slave drive first,
partition and format it internally. Then try putting it back inside its
external unit as master drive.

When the drive is plugged in the "safely remove hardware"
should be present. If that is not present then I have no
suggestions.

If it is present but there is no drive showing up in
explorer. Then that means the disk needs to be
partitioned and formatted. The Hard drive must be brand
new and all units are unallocated.
