I can not open the above mentioned drive. there is no disk in it...I just can't get the tray that holds the disk to come out. I have gone to the device manager and the trouble shooters site but still can not open it. I was told there was an emergency hole to open this tray, but my computer does not have one. My system is as follows: Presario 5400US, bios version compaq 686Pq v 1.04. I checked the status of this drive (it is e) and it says it is working properly. could it just be stuck? Jammed shut. If so, how can I open it myself without damaging anything. Please help me.

Take a closer look for that hole, it's only the diameter of a paper clip so
it is easy to miss.

I went on line last night for help with this problem. I was sent two photos of a compaq 5400US. Mine is a 5400US. but the photos that i saw had the little hole, which was very clearly seen. My tower has the cd rom with just the light (when on) and the open button. there was no other hole. I looked very closely, even with a flashlight, no hole was found. could it be behind the flap that covers the opening?

Sorry Janet, I just have never seen one without the hole and maybe it's
behind the flap but typically the flap can't be opened. Your only other
option would be to completely remove it from the tower and see if that may
help in trying to get it open. Worse case just pick up a new one, cdroms
are dirt cheap and this may be an opportunity to upgrade to a cdrw or dvd.

Two methods...

Reboot the PC.

Or open Control Panel|SYSTEM. Click on HARDWARE|DEVICE MANAGER.

Expand the branch for CD devices by clicking on the + sign.
Right-click on the name of the drive.
Click DISABLE. OK.
After it is disabled, reENABLE it...and see if the tray will open.

If no, perhaps the device is not receiving power. Check for loose or
disonnected cables...or take it to a competent technician.
