Im planning on installing an additional hard drive, IDE, and i want it as slave, My son has already ripped out most of the cables and on the ribbon i can't remember which connector is which (slave, master, and mother board).
Would appreciate the help if anyone could claer it up for me. And if there are any other precautions i should take when i install my new hard drive.
Cheers :thumb:

It dosent matter which it pluggs into, so long as the pins on the back of the HDD are in the correct place for "slave"

Chck the HD's instructions

There will be jumper at the back of the HD, with a choice of settings including master and slave. Just make sure the drive you want as a master has the jumpers set to master and the slave with the jumpers set at slave.

Edit: You might find this site helpful, http://www.mysuperpc.com/hdu/jumper_pins.shtml

Generally the end with the longest distance between the end and middle connector is the motherboard connector, the middle one is the slave connector, and the other end is the master connector. ;)

Sorry KGB, but today's ribbon cables do need to be the right way around and use on the right connection.

The modern 80wire cable is colour coded ... Blue is used for the motherboard (some manufactures have used other colours) Grey (the middle connector) is used for Slave and Black is for Master ... you will find a Red line on one side of the cable and that denotes 'pin one' which when plugged into the hard drive should be nearest the power connector.

I would also suggest using an 80 wire cable in the same configuration for any optical drive, especially if they were bought within the last year.

;)

Erm... mine dont matter

IDE1 - HDD (1/2 of them)
IDE2 - CD Drives (2 of them)

apart from that, i can have the slave and master in any way round.

the long part goes to motherboard, there a bit in middle which goes to the slave and the top one closest to to master, make sure the red line always goes to the power supply

i hope this helps sorry its so big pictures :o

Plug it in, fire it up, if it works, you done good :D

If a big blue cloud erupts from the back of your PC, one optical drive ejects a CD with with such velocity it beheads your new kitten and you hear a pre-recorded message warning of meltdown - you done bad :D

LOL!

I think the guys prob petrified after reading this!!!

OK OK OK, I best be serious, but sometimes I just can't help meself :D

Truth is, you won't do any harm connecting cables wrong way - things just won't work/be recognised.

And of course if you're using rounded cables often you have no red line to identify which end of the connector goes to pin 1.

However, most cables have lugs on the connectors which correspond to slots on the hard drive and optical drive sockets.

And most quality rounded cabels are actually labelled 'mainboard' 'slave' and 'master' which helps to alleviate any confusion.

There is one exception to the rule.

If you connect a floppy drive cable round the wrong way and you have a floppy disk in the drive, when you switch your computer on it will likely make some horrible grinding noises and your floppy drive will go to the great computer components graveyard in the sky.

So if you're not positive you've connected your floppy drive cable round the right way or not, make sure you have no disk in it when you boot.

And a sure indication the floppy drive cable is round the wrong way is when it's led stays on permanently.

Other than that, most advice offered here in this thread should see most peeps through their cable installation.

Ok thanks guys, lol. Even after the scare about the blue smoke ive installed the new drive. Works fine and im Fillin it already!
Cheers for all ur help and replys
