For approx. the past year, my CD/DVD-ROM has been disappearing and reappearing!!! I have read probably EVERY post that people have left during that time period and I am quite surprised how many others are having the same issue. What surprises me even more is how many time NO resolution was found.

I have downloaded Microsoft updates, third-party fixes posted in this group, and have turned my computer on and off about a hundred times, and nothing has worked. Every once in a while the computer WILL recognize the D: drive, but even then it usually drops it again after I insert a disc.

The manufact. of my computer has told me that it agrees with some Windows knowledge based information, that the drive goes unreadable sometimes during hibernation or stand-by. So it's NOT a "hardware" issue really, it's that the system isn't reading the hardware

Having to use my computer for work, I have become so frustrated that no real solution appears available. Can SOMEONE ANYONE, please help me find a proper resolution. It doesn't seem that Microsoft has

Can you post detailed information?
which is your pc Maker and model or mother board brand and model and bios rev., I/O interface type(USB, IDE, SCSI,Firewire, etc.)
I/O controller Brand and model,
Software you installed on your PC (CD Burn soft, utility soft - such as antivirus, firewall, etc)
CD/DVD-Rom Brand and Model.

also check your pc's event viewer log, if you can find any errors post event id and source,
or check with http://www.eventid.net

Thank you so much for your response.

Toshiba Satellite 2405-S201
My event viewer mostly:
TOSHIBA DVD-ROM SD-R2212 (IDE\cdromToshiba_DVD-rom_SD-
R2212____________1314_____)disappeared prior to being
prepared for removal

I have Norton Anti-Virus
Drag and Drop Writing

All of which have been installed since I purchased the
computer in 2002.

Toshiba claims that since the yellow light on the drive
flashes when comp. is turned on that it is probably
installed properly and not being recognized due to some
other reason.

I realize that my next action is to take it in to be
checked, but it is no longer under warranty and from what
I have read and been told it is more than likely a
processing issue.

I have similar problems on my brothers UMAX ActionBook 340T both in 2000
& XP I cannot see the TEAC CD-224E CD-Drive. It installs but once the
drivers are loaded and it needs to access the CD for Svc Packs etc it
disappears.

I got W2000 Svc Pk 3 installed by networking it.

The machine uses a VIA chipeset and I have tried the 4in1 VIA drivers
but to no avail.

The system log reports a Ide Time Out Error on that channel.

I have turned of Ultra DMA and using PIO only.

If I look in the registry you can see the CD-ROM drive but it does not
show up under device manager. Tried to tweak some settings too but didnt
work!

I can provide more detail info if you like.

Oh and when I connected A CDROM drive from my Dell via the LPT1 port it
saw it but when it rebooted the drive disappeared, strangely it is a
TEAC CD-224E too but works fine on my Dell under 2000.

is this means you don't have any error on your Event viewer?
(even not looks like one related with cd drive.)
also can you post that event id and source?
(event of prepared for removal)

is your Norton Antivirus are updated?
did you check with anti-spyware? (Adaware and/or spybot or eles)

alos this is happen when power supply has problem,
also this is happen when some trriger program are running on sytem.
(or IDE Interface has problem)

here is not exact same but similer case with Trojan program

http://www.symantec.com/avcenter/venc/data/backdoor.subseven.html

this case CD Rom Drive randomery open and file disappear random.
so not exactly same, but example of possibility.

also if you have any advanced power management utility check that setteings.

did your CD drive randamly disappear and appear?

I couldn't find UMAX Actionbook info.
is your IDE Controller driver are from UMAX?
4 in 1 VIA chip are fully compatible with your UMAX?
IF not you can contact UMAX to find supported driver.
or rollback to original driver.
also how do you connect internal IDE Drive via LPT port?
