I have two computers networked at home using WindowsXP. Both machines can
'see' each other and access each other's hard drive. The host machine can
access the Internet but the 'client' machine is unable to access the
Internet via the LAN.

The host machine is set to: "Allow other network users to connect through
this computer's Internet connection".
TCP/IP properties on both machines are set to: 'obtain an IP address
automatically'.
I have also tried closing down the Zone Alarm on the host in case that was
preventing access.

I don't know if it is significant but neither the host or client machine
show an icon in the system tray when connected to the net despite having a
check in the box telling them to show one! (They appear if I specify an IP
address, subnet and gateway but the information in Help says you cannot
specify these if using ICS.)

Can anyone help?

Disable and then re-enable sharing on the host's Internet connection.
That might fix the problem. If not, keep reading.

Don't just shut down ZoneAlarm while troubleshooting. Un-install it,
go to Start | Run | Msconfig | Startup and disable any remnants of it,
and reboot.

Then disable and re-enable the client's LAN connection and run these
tests to find the problem:

1. On the host computer, right click the local area network connection
and click Status | Support | Details. It should show:

IP Address: 192.168.0.1
Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0
Default Gateway: none
DNS Server = none

2. On the client computer, right click the local area network
connection and click Status | Support | Details. It should show:

IP Address: 192.168.0.x (1<x<255)
Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0
Default Gateway: 192.168.0.1
DNS Server = 192.168.0.1

3. If #1 and #2 are right, open a command prompt window on the client
and enter these lines. Each one should get four replies:

ping 192.168.0.1
ping 216.239.39.100
ping www.google.com

4. If #1-#3 are right, enter these addresses in Internet Explorer on
the client. They should both take you to the Google web page:

http://www.google.com
