I'm attempting to share my dial up connection on my home
network. I'm using the usual static IPs of 192.168.0.1
and 192.168.0.2 for the 2 pc's. The box with the modem is
win xp pro, in a peer to peer setup with the other pc os
being win 2000 server. (I use the 2k server box only to
store user data). static ip's seem easier to firewall
than dealing with dhcp... any ideas of how to use ICS with
static ip's or can anyone recomend a proxy server
application that's win xp compatable?

Microsoft specifically recommends NOT using ICS on a network with a
Win 2000 server. The DHCP and DNS servers on the ICS host can
interfere with the DHCP and DNS servers on the server computer and
cause problems on the network.

If you want to do it anyway, realizing the potential for problems,
make these settings on an ICS client with a static IP address:

IP Address: 192.168.0.x (1<x<255)
Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0
Default Gateway: 192.168.0.1
DNS Server = 192.168.0.1 or your ISP's DNS server

I'm replying to my own message, because I missed the part where "mgm"
said that it's a peer to peer network. In that case, when Win 2000
server isn't acting as a domain controller and providing DHCP and DNS
services to the network, ICS should be fine.
