ICS w/ crossover cable

I have 2 Dell Dimensions both running XP Pro. Each was
connected to a Linksys router through Linksys wireless
USB adapters, but one computer was too far away to get a
good connection. I tried hooking the farther one to the
closer with a crossover cable and getting online through
the closer's connection, but that hasn't worked so far.

The closer one (#1) is also connected to a printer. It
can print and get online, but can't share files with the
farther one (#2). #2 can print, but can't get online or
share files with #1.

I've run the network config wizard a few different ways
to no avail, making sure to share the "wireless network
connection to the internet." Am I missing something?

I found out ICS won't work in my case because there's a
router between computer #1 and the cable modem. My ISP
said it has something to do with the way the router
assigns IP addresses. Sounds like a crock of crap to me,
but WHAT DO I KNOW?!
