ICS Unchecked After Dial Up

I have a desktop and laptop using XP Home. Both have
wireless adapters and my network works fine except under
one condition. After starting/restarting the host
computer, if I check the shared dial up connection, it
shows shared, firewalled, disconnected. After I connect
this dial up connection, the sharing and firewall boxes
become unchecked on their own. I can then go back and
recheck them and everything is fine until I start or
restart. Why?

My ISP is Earthlink and I ususally click the desktop icon
on the host computer to connect.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Well, I found an easy workaround. Apparently, it is
something to do with the way the desktop icon for
Earthlink works. Instead of using it to connect, I created
a shortcut on my desktop to the Earthlink dial up
connection in the Network Connections folder. Using this
icon does not cause the sharing and firewall check boxes
to become unchecked.

I am not sure why the standard Earthlink connection causes
this, but I have found an acceptable fix.

I don't know what the heck I'm talking about here, so tell me if I'm
way off base and/or paranoid.

Earthlink is now flogging their wireless home networking solution
($10/month). I have had multiple communications with them to try to
find out what the difference is between their product offering and
using plain old WinXP ICS ($0/month). They have stonewalled me
continually, and will onlny say that they "...do not support Internet
Connection Sharing."

I'm wondering: could your problem the result of their feeble attempt
to disable your use of ICS?

I don't think that Earthlink can detect or disable your use of ICS.

When they say that they don't support ICS, that means that they won't
give you help with configuring, using, or troubleshooting ICS.
