ICS question

My internet connection is dial-up ISDN via a USB TA . I have a small home
network consisting of two machines, the primary that has the Internet
Connection is Windows XP and the other is W2K SP3.
My question is this:
Is there an automated feature that will allow the W2k machine to terminate
the Internet connection on the W XP machine? In other words when the user on
the W2K machine closes the application that is accessing the internet
(whether it is IE or OE) is there a function available to prompt to close
the connection on the XP machine?

On the XP machine, go into the properties for the online connection that is
being shared. In the "Intenet Connection Sharing" section, there is a box
that can be checked to "Allow other network users to control or disable the
shared internet connection."

Does this setting accomplish what you want? The help flag on this item says
that when its enabled the user on the client machine can initiate
connections and end them. The Win2000 user may not get a prompt to
disconnect the XP computer but disconnecting should end the connection for
both computers.

The W2K machine initiates a dial-up OK, but I can't see any way of making it
close the connection. There doesn't seem to be any way for W2K to "see" the
dial-up on the XP machine.

Okay, sorry. That's as far as I can go with you since I don't have Win2000
and my other system for this network is out for repairs. At least you're
halfway there.

One more thought... What if you place a shortcut for that ICS connection on
the Win2000 system (maybe use XP's Shared Documents folder to get the
shortcut over there)? Can the shortcut be double clicked while the
connection is active? This should bring up the status screen that includes
the Disconnect button since the connection is "on."

Good try - doesn't work unfortunately - the shortcut when it arrives on the
W2K machine is full of gibberish!

Aww, crumb! Well, back to the drawing board. I won't have a second machine
to fiddle with until later this week or early next week. I hope someone
else can chime in to help you out before that!

I'm running Me. I got the control over the shared dialup connection after
running the configuration disk created by the XP Networking Wizard. It
seems to run over UPnP and it gives me a tray icon and a status screen
identical to the one on the XP ICS host. On your ICS host I suggest you run
the Networking Wizard and click the box when it asks if you want a disk to
run on the client. Then the question is whether 2000 will work the same as
Me.
