Hi everyone

I have a 2pc network, both XP Pro and running through a small 5 port
hub.

The network side seems fine, both machines see each other and can read
/ write to all HD's.

I have allowed ICS, and shared the connection, but the 2nd machine
can't sem to connect to the internet through the 1st machine.

I've rerun the network setup wizard, and everything tere seems to be in
order.

Can someone point me in the right direction for other things to try, or
what to check manually to allow this?

Thanks in advance.

Regards,

Dave.

Do you have a firewall installed on the ICS machine? On Zone Alarm Pro, for
example, you have to tell it the PC is an ICS server before it lets traffic
through. (Ive heard you can't do this with the shareware version of ZA)

If you use Sygate personal firewall you can set a rule to allow all
192.168.x.x. traffic.

Hi,

I have the Win XP Firewall installed as standard - might this then be
the problem? I'm not sure how exactly the Firewall works.

btw, are you on broadband or dialup?

No, it's enabled by default when you set up a pc as an ICS server.
(When you get the network sorted out, don't use that one. Try some of the
free downloads if you dont want to pay ( a hardware one is better) . If it's
true that free Zone Alarm doesnt support ICS server then try Sygate as
Stuart says and set it up as Stuart says.)

You ARE using the Internet connection wizard and not the network setup
wizard for the second machine aren't you?

Broadband.

No, it's enabled by default when you set up a pc as an ICS server.

OK, using NAV 2004 here as well as the standard XP firewall.

I see no specific wizard for internet connection, just for network
connection. Then this window asks whether my PC connects directly or
through a network.

Have I missed something fundamentally basic here? Probably!

I#ve even searched in HELP for intrenet connection wizard, and again
this points to the network setup wizard.

Thanks in advance for any further help you can give me.

If you open IE and select tools, internet options then go to the Connections
tab, the button at the top should run the Internet Connection Wizard

good luck

Hi,

Thanks for that - by doing that, I get two options.

To either use the Network Setup Wizard, or use LAN settings.

When I use the NSW, it gives me the exact same screens as I had before,
ie seems to configure the machine for the network - which makes sense,
as the main machine on the network has the BB connection.

I'm obviously missing something so basic here it's scary, but any other
hints would really be welcome!

Thanks again.

When I go into internet connection wizard

screen 1
a welcome screen

press next to

screen 2
option 1 - Connect to the internet
option 2 - Connect to the network at my workplace
option 3 - Set up a home or small office network
option 4 - Set up an advanced connection

I'm assuming you dont get this. Ive no idea what you've got wrong with your
setup m8y, sorry ;o(

Hi,

Sorry, you're absolutely right.

Assuming I want Option 1, my then options are:

1 - choose from a list of ISPs
2 - Set up my connection manually
3 - Use the CD from an ISP

I'd assume I'd opt for two, but if so, what next? Is it best for me to
plough on or is this me on the right track now ( with your help ! )

if you've not ploughed on then Yup, select number 2

The next screen "Internet Connection" will give you 3 options
1) Connect using a dialup modem
2) Connect using a broadband connection that requires a user name and
password
3) Connect using a broadband connection that is always on

This screen may be where you're going to have to experiment on settings.
We've got cable broadband so we select no 3 here. The cable connection is
always open and autoconfigures when our set top box/modem connects.
If you select this option then the next dialog just finishes the wizard.

The phone line based DSL modems Ive seen family/friends use, requires user
name and password. Obviously the ICS server PC would require option 2 being
selected but I'm not sure whether an ICS client would also have to select
option 2. I daren't go through this option on my own pc incase it breaks my
own connection.

good luck

(When you earn enough pennies, I highly recommend dropping ICS and buying
yourself a firewall/router/switch eg Netgear FR114P. Install a software
firewall on each machine to monitor outgoing ports as hardware ones allow
all outgoing traffic by default)

Dave.
What does the previous line mean?

Sure, happy to do just that.

Pennies aren't an issue, thankfully! I'll have a sniff around then if
this is a far better option. I use phone based ADSL here, so I'll see
whats the best variant for use with my setup here.

I had no idea that was better, just thought it was another option.

The previous line list the motorbikes I currently own - my main posting
is to a UK bike newsgroup, so this is my default NG signature.

Thanks again for all your help.

Dave.
