I have a home network with 2 Windows 98 PCs connected to an XP machine. The
XP machine connects via ISDN to the web.

The three PCs talk to each other fine over the network. The XP machine
connects to the internet without difficulty. I have tried to enable internet
access from my other two machines following the manual route given here

http://www.practicallynetworked.com/sharing/xp_ics

but without success. Windows 98 clients can ping my internet IP address
without any problem but whenever I navifate to the internet I get a page
unavailable message. I have disabled my PC-cillin firewall incase this was
the problem.

Any ideas?

Thanks

Harry

sounds like DNS issue. posting the result of ipconfig /all here may help.

These tests should help find the problem:

1. On the ICS host computer, right click the local area network
connection and click Status | Support | Details. It should show:

IP Address: 192.168.0.1
Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0
Default Gateway: none
DNS Server = none

2. On an ICS client computer, go to Start | Run | Winipcfg, select the
network adapter, and click More Info. It should show:

IP Address: 192.168.0.x (1<x<255)
Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0
Default Gateway: 192.168.0.1
DNS Server = 192.168.0.1

3. If #1 and #2 are right, open a command prompt window on a client
and enter these lines. Each one should get four replies:

ping 192.168.0.1
ping 216.239.39.100
ping www.google.com

4. If #1-#3 are right, enter these addresses in Internet Explorer.
They should both take you to the Google web page:

http://www.google.com

Harry,
I have a very similar setup with the identical problem.
I have Win XP as ICS host with a single Win Me client, I have shared my
cable intenet connection across the local network successfully for some time
until recently when it mysteriously became unavailable on the client. I too
can
ping the public internet from the client but get DNS errors when browsing
with
Iexplorer. Since I also run PCcillin firewall software, this mail has made
me
realise the problem first showed up with the, then, latest
update(1.688.00)from
PCcillin for the scan engine.. Harry can you confirm this is also when you
first
experienced the problem? If so it is worth getting in touch with them I
think...
I followed Steve Winograd's instructions and was successful up till step 4,
when
I got the DNS error in my browser.
regards,
Rod Reed

Thanks to everyone for their help. I have followed Steve's instructions
without problem to step 3 whereupon it falls over at step 4 just as Rod
describes.

It is a new setup so I can't say if the PC-cillin upgrade was the start of
the problem. The first things I did on getting internet connection from the
host computer was to install PC-cillin 2002 and download the latest upgrade.
If it helps,

Program version 9.05 Build 1389
Engine Version 6.81
Pattern Version 688

Did you find a work-around for the PC-cillin problem.

Thanks

Harry

PS My PC-cillin firewall lists all 192.168.0.x IP addresses as trusted.

PPS Robert requested the result of ipconfig/all. I have done this for a
client and here is the output. The DNS servers listed are those my ISP says
to use and I can ping all three of them.
