I guess your network would be like this:
1)a wireless router connected to cable or adsl modem
2)a desktop with wireless nic
3)a laptop with wireless nic
just set the nic of desktop back to "obtain IP
automatically"
make sure your router is on
than in command line type ipconfig/release
then ipconfig/renew
Your problem is when you turn on the desktop, for some
unknown causes, the nic cant contact the DHCP service of
the router, and start using and APIPA 169.254.x.y address
with subnet mask 255.255.0.0 .
