Hi,
I have 3 computers networked. 1 W2K system and 2 Win98 systems. The
W2K system is set to dial if the other computers need interenet access,
hwoever the W2K system will randomly dial-up at times when noone is
using eithe rof the win98 machines. Yes, I can uncheck "dial-up
without asking if another computer wants internet access", however, I'd
really like to keep this feature enabled. Is there anyway to stop it
from dialing unless a machine specifically wants to get out to the internet?

Did you check the PC for spyware?

I wish it were that easy... I've scanned both systems with AVG and also
Ad-Aware and they are coming up clean.. =\

there are lots of things these days that want to connect to the internet by
themselves. most anti virus programs connect at least daily to check for
updates. windows update service checks regularly also. outlook, outlook
express, and probably most other mail programs will periodically check for
new mail. windows media player, quick time, acrobat reader, and that type of
thing may also check for updates even if being used locally. and there used
to be one of the regular network services would trigger dialing just because
it was checking the server or some other generic network maintenance task...
so don't just look for bad guys, you may have something that you just
wouldn't expect to be dialing but is perfectly normal.

Your 98s might be having auto update softwares which would
automatically try to access internet randomly. Keeping the
option ticked on your w2k machine would dial to internet
whenever your 98s or even your 2k generates requests.

So explain to me then what good "dial when a network connection is
requested" does? It's really no good.

is there a way to put an icon that does some magic some how on the 98
boxes to make the 2000 box dial up? Is there some way to make w2k dial
up from a click on something on another box?

Yes, enable telnet on your win2k machine. Then make a
batch file on your 98 that would telnet 2k and dialup a
connection.
