ICS on network

I have networked two desktops (peer-to-peer), running XP
home, and enabled ICS through the wizard but have two
problems. Firstly if the client connects, it doesn't
prompt to disconnect when IE is closed however, I
understand that this is by design and nothing can be done.

The other is that something, presumably on the client
side, prompts the host to make a dialup connection, even
when no applications are running on it.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

It can be very difficult to determine what exactly is causing the client to
dial out. There are many different things that will cause the client to
dial out, both built in to the system and third party applications.
However, if you wish, you can still retain the ability to easily connect the
internet connection from the ICS client without having auto-dial turned on.

1) On the ICS Client: Open up the Network Connections Control Panel. You
will see an icon labeled with the name of the Internet Connection on the ICS
Host machine. Drag that icon to the desktop of the ICS Client. You can
then use the icon (either with the right-click context menu, or by double
clicking) to connect the internet connection on the ICS Host.
2) On the ICS Host: Right click and select properties on your dial-up
connection. Click the Advanced tab and:
1) Make sure the checkbox labeled "Establish a dial-up connection
whenever a computer on my network attempts to access the Internet" is
unchecked.
2) Make sure the checkbox labeled "Allow other network users to
control or disable the shared Internet connection" is checked.

Thanks for this suggestion. Can you tell us how to set up
a similar shortcut for a Win98 ICS client?

Have you run the Network Setup Disk on the Windows 98 machine? If not you
will have to run this on the Windows 98 machine to enable the UPnP beacon
client on the Windows 98 machine. You can either rerun the Network Setup
Wizard on the ICS Sever and at the end select the option to create a network
setup disk. Second option is you can run the Network Setup Wizard from the
Windows XP Setup CD.

After you have configured the Windows 98 machine for UPnP Beacon client you
will have an icon in your system tray (lower right corner near the clock)
for configuring the ICS Server.
