ICS on Home network

I have been struggling for a week to get ICS working on my
two machines. Both have XP Professional installed. I tried
using the network wizard without success. The Host machine
with Dial up modem always turned the network connection to
manual 192.168.0.1 and set the DUN to ICS but running it
on the client machine it set it at 169.254.4.74. The
consequence being neither machine could see each other.
Manualy setting the client to 192.168.0.2 fixed the seeing
each other allowing file sharing etc to take place and
also allowed the Modem connection to be seen by the client
in network connections. By double clicking I could make it
dial up and connect and also make it disconnect, but
Internet Explorer can't see the connection. I have
configured Internet Explorer through the new connection
wizard and told it was a broadband connection that was
always on, as in article 306126 but to no avail.

I'm at a loss to know what to try next. Can any one
through any light on the subject please?

Many thanks John Bradley

1. Make sure XP firewall is OFF on the Network Connection.
2. If you have a 3rd Party firewall, eg: ZoneAlarm, DO NOT just switch it
Off, uninstall it.
3. Once you have your network working reinstall the 3rd Party Firewall and
configure to your setup.

The XP firewall will give some protection, whilst sorting out your system,
if you have it enabled on your Internet connection.

This worked on my system. I had the network working OK but no Internet
access from the client machine, despite disabling ZoneAlarm. Did the above,
reinstalled ZA and haven't looked back since.

Best of Luck.

You may also have to manually enter the DNS server numbers for the Internet
Service Provider in the TCP/IP properties of the network card for the
client. (i.e.. IE returns page cannot be displayed). Also, make sure IE
connection have no entries and click on LAN Settings at the bottom of the
window and make sure Automatically detect settings is not checked.
