ICS host can't access internet

After banging my head against the wall for weeks, i've decided to post
here in hopes that smarter mind have an answer.

my situation:
I have one desktop (windows xp pro) that is connected to a dsl
internet hookup.

i have a laptop (windows xp home) that can currently only get online
if i crawl down and hook it to the dsl box with an ethernet cable.

my sister has a laptop (windows xp pro) with the same situation.

all computers have wireless cards.

I would like (love, kill for) to have the desktop share the dsl
connection via wireless. so that both laptops and the desktop can all
browse the web at the same time. [i'd also like to enable file and
printer sharing so that all computers can print from the desktops
printer and store file on the desktops hard drive]

i have run the connection wizards on the ICS host...but after the lan
connection shows as being "connected, shared, firewalled"...the desktop
is no longer able to access the internet!
at that time the clients are not able to access the internet either.
(the wireless network look fine...they all say they are
connected...and the shared files are accessible)

i have not found any solutions in any troubleshooters or online help
pages. i seem to recall having this problem in a windows ME ICS
host...i think it had something do do with disabling a service...maybe
DCHP? ... i can't recall.

I'd just love it if someone could help me fix this.
thanks,
David

It is a lot easier to get a wireless router and connect the DSL box to the
router. Then, you can freely move the laptops around without worrying about
wireless access from the desktop.

it would be simpler (so i've heard) to get a router...but...1.my cash
flow is tight and 2. i would like to end up being able to use the
desktops large hard drives to store my large files.....so the gizmo i
would need to buy would fairly expensive to have wireless router
capabilities, printer serving capabilities, and huge hard drives for
storing my files.

so yeah...i'd love to get that gizmo...but i'd rather have a solution
now...than the right solution in 5 months.

thanks for the reply,

All you need is a simple wireless router, commonly available for less
than $40. With a wireless router, you can still:

1. Store large files on any of the computers.
2. Connect printers to any of the computers.
3. Share files and printers between all of the computers.

It can be hard to get ICS to work with an ad-hoc (direct
computer-to-computer connections, with no access point) wireless
network like yours.

Does the host computer have a firewall program? Some, such as the
free version of ZoneAlarm, require special configuration to work with
ICS.

Did you share the right connection on the host computer? Share the
DSL Internet connection, not the wireless connection.

Open a command prompt window (Start > Run > cmd) on the host and run
the "ipconfig /all" command. It should show that the DSL Internet
connection has properties assigned by your ISP, and the wireless
connection has:

IP Address: 192.168.0.1
Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0

thanks for replying. here are some answers:

the host computer is not running any special firewall programs...i
assume that is has the usual windows firewall enabled because when i
share the dsl connection it shows up as "connected, shared, firewalled"

I did share the right connection (the dsl)

I will look into buying a wireless router...but in the meantime i'd
like to have some solution soon.

the host has the ip address and submask you mentioned.

i can't see why the ICS wizard isn't working...but i know i've
encountered this before. the host can connect to the internet just
fine until ICS is turned on...then it can't access the net...and
neither can the client.
if any more info is needed to diagnose this problem...let me know.

thanks again,

You need to be a bit more specific about this "dsl box". Do you mean
you have to disconnect it from the desktop and connect it to the
laptop instead? Or is it a separate standalone (possibly nat) device?

ICS may not be appropriate.

Jim.

well,
the internet in my house comes in through the phone line. it's from
sbcglobal.
a phone cord (just normal,,,5 strand? i don't know what they call
it..rjx or something) runs from the phone line to a dsl modem supplied
by sbc.
from the dsl modem to the desktop is a ethernet cable.

if i want to use the laptops online i must unhook the desktop-to-
dslbox ethernet cable and hook up an ethernet cable from the laptop to
the dsl modem.

for my understanding the dsl modem just holds my account credentials
(so i don't have to log in every time i go online) and does the
encoding necceary to use the phone line for dsl.

i hope that helps.

***really the main thing i'm looking for here are ideas why the
desktop would be able to connect just fine....but as soon as i enable
ICS it refuses to see the internet.

i still haven't gotten any client to connect to the web either.

thanks everybody.

What does "ipconfig /all" and "route print" say when ICS is disabled
and you're connected to the Internet okay.
(ipconfig /all >> c:\temp.txt)
(route print >> c:\temp.txt)

Then do the same commands again when ICS is installed and it doesn't
work
(ipconfig /all >> c:\temp.txt)
(route print >> c:\temp.txt)

Then post the contents of c:\temp.txt here.

The routing tables you posted don't appear to shed any light. The most
interesting snippet for me was this which shows dhcp and nameservers
both as 192.168.0.1

The dns information is usually obtained as part of the ppp negotiation
(with your ISP) and should contain the ISP's nameserver ip address.
Since it happens to be the same address as your own local IP address
when ICS is running, that could be a reason why it's not working.

I don't know why this address is showing as your nameserver. Perhaps
you can try manually entering your ISP's nameserver information in the
tcp/ip properties.

Also, try pinging www.google.com and 4.2.2.1

If pinging by numbers works okay but you can't ping by name then that
confirms its a dns issue.

If you can't ping by name or number after entering the correct
nameserver info then I'm out of ideas.

Jim.

ok...sorry it took so long to respond.
well, i have good news ...sort of...i was able to ping a few sites
while ics was enabled by using their ip addresses.

i contacted:
http://69.147.76.15/ yahoo
http://65.212.118.121/ weather.com
http://64.233.167.147/ google

here is the catch,
while ics was disabled i opened a dos window and used "ping www.google.com"
"ping www.yahoo.com" etc. and i could see the correct ip addresses for
the sites i mentioned. but hteir were many, many site where that
didn't work.

for example, "ping www.ebay.com" returned "request timed out" as did
msn.com , aol.com , cnn.com, microsoft.com ,

and furthermore it took a really long time for yahoo and weather.com
to load in my browser about 2 minutes(with ics enabled) and the pages
were not loaded correctly...pictures were missing and page elements
were out of whack.

those same pages loaded normally with ics disabled.

so i guess step one would probably be to chage the default dns
server. when i pinged the the web i saw several different dns serves
used... "HP-core.ebay.com" "us.port.msn.com.nsatc.net"
lb1.www.ms.akadns.net" and more.

it's late and my brain isn't working well. any ideas would be
appreciated. or any other forums that might be a better place to ask.
thanks for your help.
goodnight,
dave

msn.com , aol.com , cnn.com, microsoft.com ,

Don't worry about that. A lot of sites won't respond to icmp requests
like ping. That was why I specified google.com which I know allows
them.
and furthermore it took a really long time for yahoo and weather.com
to load in my browser about 2 minutes(with ics enabled) and the pages

were out of whack.

It might be a separate issue but I don't think so. Anyway, clear up
the dns issue first and see what happens.

You need to look on your ISP's website or contact their customer
services to find out the ip addresses of their nameservers. Then enter
these numbers into the tcp/ip properties of your internet connection.
Don't just use the numbers of some other nameservers.
