ICS Difficulties

I had ICS working, on a VISTA host and W2K client. Had to reinstall Vista due
to hard disk failure. Now ICS doesn't work. File and printer sharing are ok.
I'm using Vista's firewall, and both computers are set to get IP
automatically (on both cards in the VISTA PC). What am I missing?

What machine is hosting the ICS , and what machine is the client?

Can you do an "ipconfig /all" on each computer and post the results?

Thanks. OK, the Vista PC is host, and W2K is client. IP config as follows:

W2K Client: IP obtained automatically, currently 169.254.246.174, subnet
255.255.0.0, no gateway defined.

Vista Host. 2 cards.

Card 1 (Internet): obtain IP automatically, currently 85.139.106.68, subnet
255.255.254.0, gateway 85.139.107.254, also some DHCP & DNS servers. Do you
need them? Network centre has this as Network 2

Card 2 (Local, to the other PC): obtain IP automatically, currently
169.254.124.209, subnet 255.255.0.0, no default gateway. Network Centre has
this as network 3.

File sharing between the PC´s is fully functional, but the W2K pc cannot see
internet.

On the little map in Vista, it shows the connection to internet for Network
3 as not working.

Thanks for your time, and I look forward to your advice.

Regards

David

Card 2 on your Vista box appears misconfigured. It is attempting to get an
ip address automatically (and failing), because it is the one who should be
giving ip addresses out. The Win2k client is also failing to receive an ip
address, because the Vista machine is not sending out ip addresses.

ICS does not appear to be enabled on your Vista machine.

You can get to the appropriate control panel by typing "Network Connections"
into the location bar of any explorer window and pressing enter.

Then enable ICS the same way you would have enabled it on Windows XP.
(Right-click Card 1, click properties, click sharing tab, and enable ICS).

This should re-set the settings on Card 2 to allow for ICS.

Hi,

Thanks for the info. Unfortunately, however, ICS is enabled. Interestingly,
when I enable ICS on the Internet card, it changes the IP on the Local card
to 192.168.0.1 and subnet to 255.255.255.0. I had to change it to automatic
IP afterwards. I also tried accepting this setting and changing the W2K card
to manual IP, 192.168.0.2, subnet 255.255.255.0 and gateway 192.168.0.1. This
allowed file sharing but again no Internet on the client PC.

To me, a non-professional, it seems the two cards on the Vista computer
don´t want to talk to each other. Is there anything I can do to solve this?

Thanks again.

It is supposed to change the local card's IP to 192.168.0.1 and subnet to
255.255.255.0. Setting it to automatic is incorrect. However, if you left it
at this setting, it should have started working with windows 2k if you
restarted the box or repaired the connection.

Is your network 3 set as a private network in Windows Vista?

By this I mean if you left it at 192.168.0.1/255.255.0.0, not automatic.

Both networks are Private networks in Vista.

I tried with both PC´s on manual IP´s and while file sharing worked,
internet on the client computer did not. I just can´t figure outv what´s up,
as before reinstalling, everything was fine.

I have experienced the same issue with RC1. I re-installed the OS twice and
found that I couldn't get it to work as in XP Pro SP2.

My work-around has been to reverse the connection from my computer to the
internet (broadband) with the connection from my computer to the router.

For some reason, this works.
