I have a client that has four computers sharing a dial-up
connection via ICS. All works fine with the exception
the connection is active ALL the time. I have disabled
any automatic update functions in the OS and from any
installed software (as far as I can tell) but once a
connection is made it still seems to stay connected. The
connection is set to diconnect after 30 min of
inactivity. Unfortunately, something is keeping it
active.

Anyone have any suggestions as to what to look for??

Thanks,

Ian

Ian,

I suggest using two things:
1) Get a software firewall that monitor outgoing traffic. I use
ZoneAlarm, and it logs all application that send network traffic out
from your system. I can see exactly which applications are trying to
send data out and deny permission if I want. The free ZoneAlarm is fine,
and the "premium" versions give you more control over individual TCP/IP
ports also.
2) I use a free utility from PC Magazine called NetPerSec. It shows the
amount of traffic on your network, but not the origin or destination of
it. Still, it's useful to get a better idea what's being sent.

Good luck,
Mike

Too bad: ZDNet got greedy. Their freeware is no longer free. You are
supposed to pay a subscription fee to access their "copyrighted
freeware".

PC Mag freebies are no more
