Just delete the icon - it's only a shortcut.
You can ONLY delete programs in Add/Remove Programs in Control Panel.
in fact when you delete the icon it will TELL you that you are not removing
the program.

In most cases, desktop icons are shortcuts--pointers to a
program, not the program itself. Removing them leaves the program
intact.

However, be careful. What I say above is not necessarily true,
and it's possible to put an actual program on the desktop. You
can tell a shortcut from a program by the small curved arrow in
the lower left corner of a shortcut icon.

It's *usually* a shortcut, but not necessarily.

Panel.

No, not so. Programs often have their own uninstall routines,
which works just like the add/remove entry.

And you can even just delete the program's exe file; although you
should never do it this way, it *is* possible.

VERY unusual though......

Yes, for most people, you're certainly right. I know a couple of
people, however, who insist on using the desktop as a place to
download all files to. I think it's very poor practice, but I'm
been unable to convince them.

I personally wouldn't go to someone else's machine and delete any
old file I found on the desktop, assuming it was just a shortcut,
without checking to be sure.
