I have created a shortcut on my desktop to and excel spreadsheet on the
served.
The icon is the usual yellow folder - I would like to change this but
when I go into it's properties I don't see the option to change icon
Could someone please tell me how to do this?
Thank you

It sounds like you made the shortcut incorrectly. Delete it and try again.

Using Network Places (or a shortcut directly to the server if you have
one), find the file for your excel spreadsheet - *not* the folder that
the spreadsheet is in. Right-click the file and drag it to your Desktop.
Release the mouse button and choose "Create Shortcut". This should
create a shortcut with the Excel icon on your Desktop. Double-clicking
this icon should open the Excel spreadsheet from the server.

Using Vista, I have short-cuts on my desktop and have tried to change the
properties. They continue to appear "blank". The programs run, but it's not
very eye appealing. Any suggestions?

You should ask the experts in the Vista newsgroups.
