MY 14 YEAR OLD SON DOESN'T WANT TO SEE ALL THE ICONS ON
HIS DESKTOP AND REMOVES SOME OF THEM AND SENDS THEM TO
HIS DOCUMENTS. CAN THIS MESS UP THE WINDOWS PROGRAM? HE
COMPLAINS THAT NOW HIS ICONS CHANGE AND BLINK AND RENAME
BY THEMSELVES. TEMPORARILY! IS THIS BECAUSE OF HIS
ICONS BEING PUT INTO HIS DOCUMENTS FOLDER, OR IS IT A
HACKER?

You don't need icons on the desktop to use Windows. A fresh install of
Windows XP places only the Recycle Bin on the desktop. As you install
programs they may plop a shortcut on the desktop. These don't have to stay
there if he doesn't want them.

Any icons with the small shortcut arrow in the lower left hand corner can
be deleted. If these pointer files are aimed at programs, there are
probably duplicates in his start menu that he can use to launch the
programs instead.

For system icons: My Computer, My Documents, etc: Right click the desktop
and select Properties. On the desktop page, click customize. Remove the
checks for the system icons that are not wanted on the desktop.

Hi April,

If he doesn't use the icons on the desktop, delete them. If he wants them
periodically, drag them to the Quick Launch bar. Or right click the
Desktop/Arrange Icons By and uncheck Show Desktop Icons.

As for the blinking, have him run the edit on line 157:

If the icons are changing after empting TIF:

These are generally known as favicons.ico (Favorite Icons) and they normally
will only last until your Internet Explorer Temp files are cleared.

This program will allow you to save the favicons.ico (Favorite Icons)
permanently in a different folder and re-associate your favorites with the
stored icons.
