The text below the icons on my desk top had until about a
month ago invisible or transparent background so that the
picture in the background came through the text which was
white with a shadow
Now the text sits in a rectangle which is hard to match
in colour if the background pictore has a gradation such
as a sky

Click on the Start button
Select Control Panel
Then select Performance and Maintenance/Adjust Visual Effects/"Use drop shadows
for icon labels on the Desktop".
If this still doesn't do the trick, right-click the desktop, point to Arrange
Icons By and make sure that Lock Web Items on Desktop is un-checked

Thank you very much for taking the trouble to reply its
just that I cant see a "Performance and Maintenance"in my
control panel would it be under an icon with a different
name?
I would be grateful for a reply

Regards

Uncheck Display Properties->Desktop->Customize Desktop->Web->Lock Desktop
items

Hi there,
First, make sure Web Items on the desktop are unlocked.

a.. Right-click on the desktop, point to Arrange Icons By, then make sure
Lock Web Items on Desktop is unchecked.
That alone might solve the problem. If it doesn't, there is one other
setting to change.

1.. On the Desktop, right-click on My Computer, then click Properties.
2.. In the System Properties dialog, click the Advanced tab.
3.. Under Performance, click Settings.
4.. On the Visual Effects tab, make sure Use drop shadows for icon labels
on the desktop is selected.
5.. Click Ok, then click Ok again.
Hope this helps.
