Icons missing from desktop

Icon creation is a per application thing.
You can create your own. They are called "shortcuts".
 
There are several ways, but here's one of the easiest: Right drag the
application's exe file to the desktop. When you release the mouse
button, choose "Create shortcut here" from the menu.

Come across an interesting website, try right-drop down to send the shortcut
to the desktop ... Not there at all.

Maybe I'm just dumb ..... doh !!!!!!!

That depend entirely on the program and how its installation routine
is written. Although what you say is common, it's by no means
universal. Sometimes it's automatic, sometimes it's an option,
sometimes it isn't done at all.

If the program's installation routine doesn't do it automatically,
it's easy enough to do it yourself as I suggested.
