Applications that start with Windows can be found here:
- the WIN.INI, section [windows], entries "run=" and "load="
- the Registry keys
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\RunServices
- the folders
C:\DOCUMENTS AND SETTINGS\ALL USERS\START MENU\PROGRAMS\STARTUP
C:\DOCUMENTS AND SETTINGS\{username}\START MENU\PROGRAMS\STARTUP
See also "How to Troubleshoot By Using the Msconfig Utility in Windows
XP" (http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=310560).

HI, I too wondered about this-Thorsten, you listed the location. How can
these safely be removed-I know little about the registry and would like to
know "how to" remove these at start up as well.
Also, in the control panel under 'task bar & start menu prop'>then under
customize, I see lots of programs that I don even have any more and would
like to perm. remove them from that list- It give the option to hide when
inactive but do not want them there at all. How can thay be removed from
there too;for good-
hope anyone can help, thanks

Use MSCONFIG. If you have eliminated all items that you do no longer
need, you can safely delete these things from the Registry at
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Shared Tools\MSConfig\services
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Shared
Tools\MSConfig\startupfolder
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\shared
Tools\MSConfig\startupreg.
Also, in the control panel under 'task bar & start menu prop'>then under
customize, I see lots of programs that I don even have any more

See "How to Clear Past Items from the Notification Area"

THanks Thorsten- I was able to navigate to that area in the registry just
fine by clicking on the link in MS below and follow the instructions.
HOWEVER, when I get to that point in the registry, how can I delete SOME of
the items without all of them. See...like I said lots of those programs in
the 'past section' or even in the current section'' I do not have anymore
but some I DO. Is there a way to delete only the ones that you dont want to
see there anymore???-
Another question, if the answer is 'no', then is it bad to remove them at
all-Do they come back in the notification area in the task bar once a
program is opened again?-so removing them in the registry as you suggested
on the link below will not perm. delete the program??

This is not possible. Items that are still in use will reappear in the
Properties for the Taskbar and you need to reconfigure them here.

The program itself will not be affected by this procedure.
