Icons in Taskbar won't hide

Got a strange problem and I can't find any reference to
it on Technet. All of a sudden the icons in my task bar
aren't auto-hiding (even though the control in
the "Customize Notifications" window is set up to "hide
when inactive"). All the icons are hanging out there all
the time, and the button to hide/show them is missing.
Anyone got any ideas?

Also, how do I clear out the list of "Past Items" in
the "Customize Notifications" window? I've done text
searches through the entire Windows directory structure
and can't find where this damned thing is hidden.

I'm getting the exact same problem and it's driving me
nuts. Won't auto-hide and no button to expand/shrink.
Taskbar properties Auto-Hide is checked. Unchecked it
and rechecked it several times while rebooting inbetween
to no avail. Why isn't the Auto-hide working? Was
working one minute but not the next. Recently applied
new Oct updates. XP Pro

I just applied the patches as well. I've noticed that
the button has returned, but only after I've been working
on the machine for an hour or so. Previously, icons
would come up hidden upon booting. Why is it that when
MS fixes one thing, two other things break???

Thanks Anando! That did the trick. As long as at least
one of the usual startup programs is designed "always
hide", the arrow button will appear. Now if I can only
figure out how to clear out the "past items" in
the "Customize Notifications" window...
