I'm a XP home edition user and it is on a dell laptop. The problem with the notification area (or system tray, the region displaying time and many small icons) has been annoying me ever since the purchase. After startup of computer, some of the icons are often missed which should normally show up in that area, like VOLUME, or HARDWARE SAFE REMOVAL. Strangely, sometimes they do appear. But more often they do not. This is really undesirable because when I plug my USB memory onto the computer, the SAFE REMOVAL icon usually does not appear. This forces me to remove without safely disactivating the memory. How can I possibly get this around

I found this was happening to me when I was using the
auto log on feature. Once I started using the welcome
screen to log on (not booting straight into the desktop),
that seemed to fix the problem.
If you're using the auto log on, perhaps try this:
Start, Run, then type in control userpasswords2
Press Enter
Now check the box "Users must enter a user name and
password to use this computer"
Follow any prompts, you can leave password blank if you
like.
