For the last few days the webpage icons on my favorites list have
vanished.
I restored them by reclicking on all the favorites and adding the pages
again (how boring was that?), but after a disc cleanup they vanished
again. NOW please don't tell me to uncheck the Offline webpage box in
disc cleanup as that has vanished too.

Favicons are only temporary until cleared from your cache.
To make them permanent:
FavOrg-PCMag: http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,1759,1558477,00.asp

or

The Code Project - FavIconizer:
http://www.codeproject.com/tools/faviconizer.asp

or

AM-DeadLink - Download FavIcons and detect dead Browser Bookmarks:

Hi,
Favicons are kept in the Temporary Internet Files folder and are eventually
replaced by newer files or are cleared when the TIF is cleared. Disk cleanup
is probably clearing out the Temporary Internet Files folder.

These programs (freeware) will preserve favicons:
AM-Deadlink- Favicons: http://www.aignes.com/deadlink.htm
FavIconizer - The Code Project :
http://www.codeproject.com/tools/faviconizer.asp?target=favicons
FavOrg http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_tweaks.htm line 108

Hope this helps,

It did help briliantly (FAvicons) - then suddenly my whole ie6 went
awol. Kept shutting down, telling me there was a corrupt file. After
much searching and dskchks it seems this is Windows Catalogue Lnk,
which I think is something to do with all that icon stuff. Any ideas
how I get out of this one? Have been trying with the online Windows
check, but it keeps hanging up at about the same file...
Eeek.
Writing this from another computer as the main one is all but useless
on the internet now.

Which program did you install? AM-Deadlink? Can you uninstall if from
Control panel> Add or remove programs?

I would try to uninstall it first, then (if necessary) restore to the last
System Restore point before it was installed.

Start> Programs> Accessories> System Tools> System Restore.

It was Faviconiser. Not able to remove with add/remove progs nor had
it an uninstall button of its own.
I am in serious trouble now as the Internet explorer hangs up totally
if I do anything like enter a web site name in the address bar or open
the histories or favourites list.

It won't let me restore sytem to any of the old restore points.

Having followed all the microsoft advice the fault seems to be with a
missing or corrupted file in /History IE5/ called index.dat.

Any idea how I can restore this file?
My windows disc is OEM from Sony and can't locate files without a total
system reinstall.
