for a really long time now the icons for gif files and
text files just show up as a generic icon. bitmap, jpeg
and word files do not do this. i would really like to
find out how to make the .gif and .txt file icons show up
again.

At this time, the only things I can think of is: 1. if
you double click on the icons do they open the right
programs? if so, then you may just need to change the
icon picture.
This is done through Windows Explorer, Tools, Folder
options, File types

When you scroll down the list of file types - which icons
are next to gif and txt?

IS IT the top icon, the middle or the bottom one?

Example: look down the list for gif, click on [advanced]
does it give you the option to change the icon? If so
try it, click ok and see what happens?

Does it fix it?

Secondly, make sure your anti-virus software is up to
date.
