I have used Iconlock for some time at a local charitable institution. Mostly
we use it because the older people who use the computers end up accidentally
dragging the desktop icons when they try to click. The security of
preventing them from deleting things is helpful too.

Now we need to find a replacement as it is conflicting with one particular
software program, preventing it from launching. I have tried Iconoid, but IT
has a problem with the active desktop we use to provide desktop content
across the network.

The main goal is to provide a consistent desktop on all the computers so no
matter when or where someone comes in, the icons are in the same relative
positions, and to be able to EASILY return any changes to the desired state.

Maybe the suggestion in

can help?

All the best,

ActivIcons:

"ActivIcons makes it simple to change properties for various icons on
your Windows desktop and in Explorer, plus attributes for many other
desktop settings.

*You can save and restore the desktop layout*,

repair corrupted icons, increase the size of the Windows icon cache to
prevent future problems, and much more. You can substitute your own
icons for the standard Windows icons and cursors. In fact, ActivIcons
goes through your Registry and lists out all of the icons found there,
so that you can change those as well. You can even use ActivIcons to
display animated icons on your desktop, or make the icon text labels
transparent."

It's Pricelessware.

I've been using WinTidy which gets the job done unless you have dog.jpg and
dog.gif and dog.wmf - it will put one on top of the other, not very
impressive and now controlled I believe by PC Magazine that requires a paid
subscription to get what was once freeware. It is a little better in some
ways in that it can save and restore various screen resolutions with the
icons, and also has predefined layouts. You can find it free somewhere on
the www if the others mentioned don't do for you.

Thanks, that or WinTidy (if I can find a free copy) might do the trick. The
only way to be sure it doesn't conflict is to install and see.
