Icon Spacing and Grouping

Microsoft has changed the way the program icons are spaced and grouped
in the bottom toolbar (between QuickLaunch and System Tray -- in the
middle) when the programs are minimized. In 2000, when the space fills
and additional programs are opened, the program icons become narrower to
allow more to fit. In XP, they either go to a second row or group behind
a single icon, neither of which do I like. Is there a way to cause XP to
treat minimized program icons like 2000 does?

Yes. Right-click a blank area on Taskbar, then click on Properties in
resulting pop-up menu. In dialog box, be sure Taskbar tab is selected.
Click on "Group similar taskbar buttons" to uncheck it. Apply,OK to close.
Enjoy...

Thanks for the information, but if I recall correctly, that change only
solves the problem for the icons to be grouped under a single icon. It
does not solve the problem of icons wrapping to the next line. (They
shrink to prevent wrapping in 2000 and before.)

I just tried it here. The taskbar buttons are shrinking/resizing with
grouping turned off.

You don't recall correctly. It works here!

What happens after you open the eighth or ninth program? Do the icons
continue to a second row? Mine does, and my Windows 2000 machine does
not.

Place the mouse cursor at the top of the taskbar so that it becomes a double
arrow. Hold down the left mouse button and drag it down.

That's not the problem. After a certain number of icons are on the task
bar (8 or so) they wrap to the next line. The task bar does not increase
in height.

I don't understand how they can wrap to the next line if the taskbar has
been reduced to one line.
