The space between Icons, Thumbnails, Folders etc is far to large for my
personal preference, not the Icons themselves but I cant find information
anywhere on how to reduce the size used, I have also been trawling through
totally irrelevant google results and the Control panel in vain for a few
hours trying to find these settings, could someone please tell me where to
adjust this, if I have the space to show eight icons vertically I really
don’t want to only see four, it’s a total waste of viewing space.

I can understand that some want it to function like that and others are
happy with a text list but there does not appear to be a happy medium between
looks and functionality.

Help.

This can be done as normal but getting there is different ;)

Personalisation / Windows Colour and Appearance / Open Classic .... /
Advanced / Icon Spacing

Another way you might want to try,

Right click the desktop,
Select View and Classic Icons for the smallest,
the View box will disappear so Right click the desktop again,
Select View and Align to grid,
Right click the desktop again,
Select View and Auto Arrange,
Sometimes the Icons disappear so,
Right click again, select View and click Show desktop Icons.

If you want to rearrange the Icons, then turn off Auto arrange.

Neil Harley, thank you very much for posting the directions, I hate to think
how many times I was in that menu without seeing the link.

Thanks again.

Also thanks to you also JerryM, it’s always nice to know the different ways
to manipulate the settings.
