Icon picture missing

i have the icons on my desktop, but the picture of icon is missing for
Recycle bin , my network places and all the folder icons and also all music
and video files.. i tried right clicking > properties>Change icon.. but it
still remains same. also in my start..on the left hand side where we keep
shortcurts to most often used programs, the icon pic for them is also
missing...
i will be grateful for any kind of suggestion or help :)
