Icon Aroows

I have seen some of these suggestions but they are not really any good
because they disconnect some of the links needed to use certain shortcuts.
For example if you apply the removal of IsShortcut from the registry the
game window shortcuts will not work.

Anybody else got any ideas?

Thanks,

BK

TweakVI has a free dowload version, I saw this in another posting but can't
find it now to reply to, old age and stupidity LOL

Anyway, it was thought the free version didn't remove the arrow, but my
icons are now arrow free so i think maybe it gives you one go at it.

Edit the registry.

Under the key:
"HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\explorer\Shell
Icons"

Create a new value with the following info:

Name: 29
Type: REG_SZ
Data: C:\WINDOWS\system32\shell32.dll,50

Keith,

I see no such key.

I do see ShellIconOverlayIdentifier.

Does the key need to be created?

Okay, thanks. Another tweak to add to my list so that I can
copy and paste for other users. This question comes up a lot.

Take care,

Michael

Thanks,

Sorry... If you make a Shell Icons key it works. I had ShellIcons without
the space. It was hard to tell my the post if there were a space there or
not.

Thanks to All

BK

You've already gotten answers to your question, but I'll add another
comment.

My recommendation is that you do *not* do this. The arrows serve an
important function--providing quick visual identification of a shortcut. If
you remove the arrows, you run the substantial risk that sooner or later you
will delete something you wanted to keep, thinking that you were just
deleting a shortcut to it.

The registry hack only works on the next reboot. I noticed that when you
reboot the second time that the icons that had the arrow on them are now
just a black box. Anybody?

I'm seeing the same thing, Bryan -- it was apparently a problem with
transparency. The page with the freeware linked to in Jim W's post
discusses the problem as well -- the author has a beta link with an icon
that should behave correctly, but I haven't tried it.

I did find a blank icon in another dll that behaves better, but it shows a
pale outline of the overlay area in icon mode and a thin black frame on the
left & top edges in list mode. Kind of interesting really, kind of a
minimalist reminder that the icons are shortcuts and not actual files &
folders. Here it is:

C:\Windows\System32\imageres.dll,11

I had the same problem until I updated my ATI video drivers. I was using the
ones from the Windows Update site. I downloaded the Catalyst 7.1 and solved
the problem.
