Hi all,
after almost three years of service my IBM Deskstar DTLA-307030 has
finally failed me. The BIOS of all machines I tested it on doesn't
recognise the harddisk at all.

The harddisk itself makes a clacking noise, rythm much like a heart
beat.

IBM (or better Hitachi) will replace it for me, but what about the
data? There were a few things on the drive that I haven't backed up.

I will try and get the same model second hand to try and swap the
controller card. I don't think the controller card thingy will work,
but have to try anyway. Is there anything else I can do?

Thanks to anybody willing to cheer me up.

I suspect you won't be cheering up anytime soon :-( If its not recognised
and makes the clacking sound its usually beyond normal repair

Professional recovery should be able to get the data back if
the heads havent gouged up the media, but its very expensive.
