I have a 3 year old HD that just went out. It turns on but won't
mount as it has on my Mac OS 10.3.2 and it beeps. I have data that I
want to pull off it if possible, so my thought was to just buy another
drive off ebay, and then pull the logic board first and try that, and
if that won't work, then take the disks out of the bad drive and swap
them in the newer one. Is something like this possible?
Thanks,
Cory

Usually not with that particular model.

You cant usually swap the logic card between two working copys.

Obviously you dont have much to lose if there is no
alternative and you wont pay for pro recovery tho.

The "deathstar" can usually not be repaired this way. However
most data-recovery companies know the problem and can usually
solve it. Might be expensive though. The last time we got a
quite for this problem it was around 2000CHF (1300Euro/1600USD),
if I remember correctly. We decided to just tghrow away the drive.

And you shouldn't get drives from Ebay. All it takes is one
mechanical shock and the drive will die early.
