Hi,

I've had an IBM Netvista 8311 for about a year now and has been working very
well running WinXP without any lockups or freezing (touch wood), no corrupt
files etc. It does have a 40GB IBM Deskstar which has worked well too.
I have recently chkdsk'd, defragged and found no bad sectors or run into any
trouble.

I understand that these disks have firmware that moves the heads when the
computer is inactive. It whines when it does this which from what I've
read, is normal. It also makes a tick-tock sound occasionally just after
the whining sound.

Sometimes however when starting or shutting down the computer or even
maximising MSN, it makes a squeaky sound. When idling it is quiet and when
in use it is also.

Would this have something to do with the head mechanism?
Any cause for concern?

Thats just a mouse thats got trapped in the drive.

Yep, I'd bin it myself. IBM GXP drives aint called DeathStars myself.

Even if you're fully backed up, death of the boot drive
can still be a real pain unless you ghost it at a very
high rate and even that is a real pain to have to do.
