I386 directory

I have a laptop running Windows 2000 professional, and
inadvertantly dragged and dropped a directory named /I386/
into C: . I did not notice the original location of that
directory when this occured. Can anybody help me figure
out where that is supposed to be?

I found these on my W2K Pro box:

C:\Program Files\Java\j2re1.4.1_02\lib\i386
C:\WINNT\Driver Cache\i386
C:\WINNT\ServicePackFiles\i386

and ISTR that D:\i386 is a folder on an MS OS CD (NT4, I think;
maybe also W2K).

Thanks, but I don't have a /Java/ directory
inside /Program Files/ , and C:\WINNT\ServicePackFiles\i386
and C:\WINNT\Driver Cache\i386 are both there.

If it helps, this /I386/ directory has the following
subdirectories: /$OEM$/, /COMPDATA/, /SYSTEM32/,
and /UNIPROC/ . It also has a huge list of files that in
clude extensions such as .CS_ , .DLL , .INF , .Nl_ , .PNF
and many others. 4,116 objects total in this drectory.

I can't find anything like it on my desktop that's running
WIN 2k.

Your help is greatly appreciated.

Sounds to me like you either dragged the i386 folder from
the OS CD-ROM disk, or you dragged a copy of it that had
already been copied to your HD from the CD-ROM disk.

If you have a major brand laptop (e.g., Dell), then I am
almost certain it is the latter. If so, I believe the
i386 folder should either be in the root directory, or
in a directory called "BACKUP" (or something similar).
You could call tech support and ask if that's right.

Perhaps if you give the make and model of the laptop you
have, someone with an identical model can search for "i386"
on it for you. Or if it is a work laptop, you could ask the
sysadmins who set it up.

Again, thanks for your reply.

The laptop is a Compaq Presario 1700T.

The OS CD-Rom disk was not in the drive when this happened.

Also, the machine seems to be running fine.
 
Compare the contents of "C:\i386" with
"C:\WINNT\ServicePackFiles\i386" and
"C:\WINNT\Driver Cache\i386"

If it's the same number of files, same file names, same file sizes, etc. You can delete C:\i386
If you're not sure, move them to a CD-R, DVD-R, or Zip disk.
The files in "C:\WINNT\Driver Cache\i386" should be on a "Master CD" or "Restore CD" that came with the Compaq.
Those in "C:\WINNT\ServicePackFiles\i386" come from the service pack installation.
