Hi

New user to TS.

I would like to setup a computer that will accept up to 5 clients connected
simultaneously running a couple of applications, IE, Outlook & QuickBooks.

I have a server running Windows 2000 SBS including ISA with 2 NIC's Internal
& External, the external goes through a router.

I don't mind installing another computer on my LAN if necessary.

Any guidance and help would be much appreciated.

Regards
Barry

I would install a separate Terminal Server.
It's not recommended to run Terminal Services in Application mode
on your Domain Controller or ISA, for performance and security
reasons.
SBS2003 doesn't even support TS in Application mode anymore, so an
upgrade would force you to install a dedicated TS as well. Best to
go that way from the beginning.

You can install the TS Licensing Server on the Domain Controller
without negative side effects.

Be prepared to do some testing, QuickBooks is known to create
problems when running on a TS (depending on which version of
QuickBooks you use).

Hi Vera

Thanks for the advice.

TS In Application Mode.

Licensing, do I need additional licenses?

Presently running Windows 2000 SBS with 5 CAL, each workstation is running
Windows XP Pro or Windows 2000 Pro.

Regards
Barry

You won't need additional licenses, since all W2K Pro and XP Pro
clients receive a free TS CAL from the TS Licensing Server.

You *will* need to install and activate the TS Licensing server on
your Domain Controller (can run on SBS 2000).

Hi Vera

Can you advise how I:-

Give the group Full Control to
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Intuit\QuickBooksRegistration
Give the group Full Control to the .QPG key in HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT

Regards
Barry

Thanks Patrick

I have placed in my Favorites.

If you plan on adding a second server to run Terminal Server, you can find
some hardware recommendations here:

You can change permissions on registry keys from within RegEdt32, in
the Edit - Permissions menu.

Hi Vera

I am having problems with QuickBooks 2004 Pro (you did warn me)

Can you confirm I followed the correct procedure:-

1) I run the utility change user /install (I tried add & remove programs
this also failed)
2) I run the QuickBooks installation and accepted all default settings, and
had to restart the server
3) I made the changes:-
a.. create a QuickBooks Users group
b.. add your users to this group
c.. give the group Full Control to
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Intuit\QuickBooksRegistration
d.. give the group Full Control to the .QPG key in HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT
e.. give the QuickBooks Users group Modify rights to the Program
Files\Intuit\QuickBooks Pro folder
Did I miss anything?

PS: QuickBooks Enterprise Edition works fine.

Regards
Barry

Are you running W2K or 2003 on the Terminal Server? That makes all
the difference!
If you run W2K on the TS, all W2K Pro and XP Pro clients receive a
free TS CAL from the TS Licensing Server. All other clients need a
purchased TS CAL (and *all* clients need a normnal server CAL).

If you run 2003 on the TS, *all* clients need a purchased TS CAL
and a server CAL, but XP Pro client can apply for a free
Transition TS CAL, if you owned the XP Pro desktop license before
24 April 2003.

Sounds to me that you did everything right. Does it work when you
log in as Administrator? Do you get any error messages when you
log in as normal user? If you get an "access denied" error, or
something that sounds like a permission problem, I would download
FileMon and RegMon from http://www.sysinternals.com/. Run them as
administrator, start a TS session as a normal user and try to run
the application.

FileMon and RegMon will show you all "access denied" errors
that occur, so that you can give your users the necessary
permissions on a file-to file or Registry subkey basis.

Thanks.. they are running Windows 2000 Server with windows 2000 and XP systems on their network - home users are a combination of XP home/Pro, 98 and Windows 2000

The links should help with any other questions.
