I wonder if....

I wonder if it would be possible to create a hybrid OS that runs both
Microsoft and *nix software. I mean. If Microsoft teamed up with Red Hat or
BSD to make a unified OS that could run anything on the market. Both sides
could give it away and make their profits on "additions" Microsoft could
sell it's office and server extensions like SQL Server and Exchange Server,
Red Hat could sell it's current enterprise additions, everyone makes money,
noone gets left behind, and the we can call a truce in the OS war instead of
spending billions on legal debates and security measures. I mean with all
this fighting the only ones that are suffering are the users competition is
good, but in a market with such zeal from both sides, I'm sure alot of time
and money that could be used to make the software better is being wasted on
lawsuits and anti-piracy measures. I use both platforms so I don;t care one
way or the other, I just hate to see valuable resources and time go to waste
on the "I'm better than you are" debate.

They already do. It is called NT and W2k. NT has had a Posix subsystem
from day one IIRC. Other third parties have created other *nix subsystems
that will run most things like any other unix. I forget the name at the
moment. MS also has services for unix that you can install. Nothing would
stop RH from building a subsystem for NT. Today a lot of folks feel better
runing *nix in a VM or visa-versa. NT was built for this kind of
abstraction. The kernel is just a kernel. Any subsystem can run on top to
support other APIs, GUIs, etc.

They'll never do that. Microsoft controls its markets via its monopoly on
desktop operating systems. For example, IE won the browser wars because MS
knew that by bundling it with Windows 90% of users would have it installed
by default and have no good reason to go out and find an alternative. They
did the same with Messenger, Media Player etc.

Not to mention that it would take away meaning in so many peoplse lives.
What would all the linux geeks do? ;)

Umm
http://www.linspire.com/
http://sourceforge.net/projects/freedows/

Granted, those aren't really hybrids, but alot of Windows software runs
on it.
