Of course there's a possibility, that's why every single supporting document
on the web that discusses upgrades of any operating systems recommends that
you backup critical data before you begin. Will it likely happen? No, but
there's always the potential that a) the upgrade will go south and
necessitate a clean install or b) the upgrade will have problems importing
the old user account and simply create a new one.
If you upgraded and lost data, set folder options to see hidden and system
folders. Then check C:\Users for remnants of the former user account. If not
there, then check for a windows.old folder on the root of the drive and your
old user account should be located in there for you to recover data from.
