Probably the biggest software disappointment in my life. I had read all
about the retuned TCP stack that was supposed to be commensurate in
performance with Linux's Web100 kernel ... Not even close. My throughput is
far worse on Vista than it was on XP and that is without any segment
retransmissions (ie the TCP window scaling Vista sucks it is definitely not
made for high speed data transfers over a WAN). Ok so I'll just have to
proxy everything to a box with an OS written by engineers who understand what
a WAN is and limit any transfers on a Windows ox to the LAN, I guess I can
live with that because the functionality is so much better and applications
run faster.... Wrong again, besides having to move a ton of peripherals that
are no longer supported to an older PC running XP, after I finally got the
Vista Upgrade Advisor to run inidciating no problems the upgrade still broke
my NVIDIA graphics card. Continuing its inability to play well with others,
Vista doesn't work with WinPcap so you can't even get a TCP dump to diagnose
network problems anymore and the kind engineers spent most of the hours that
would have been well used on the TCP stack figuring out how to break any
competiior's application. There's a neat little feature that makes the
Mozzila browser window vibrate just fast enough to make you sea sick so it
totally unusable. My advice to anone condiering purchasing Vista is "DON"T
WASTE YOUR MONEY". Definitely the worst purchase of my life and it was free
through the MSDNAA Software Center at NCSU where I am a student.
Unbelievable ...
