I was dumb

I did a dumb thing and temporarily opened an
FTP w/2000 server, without security with
read and write priv. It was only supposed to
be for a few minutes and was forgotten.

Someone found it and tried exploiting it.
They only succeeded in creating numerous
subfolders. My problem is that these
are now not deletable. The first subfolder
is just blank spaces. The rest are all named
but with leading and trailing spaces. When
try to delete or rename I get the error message
that "cannot read from file or disk".

Does anyone know how I can get rid of these?

Thanks,
Fox

Hi,

I tried all the Dos commands I know and could not beat it.
The second link you sent was very promising, but I do not
have the 2000 resource kit, only the old NT 4.0.
The knowledge base talked about POSIX and RM.EXE from
the Reource Kit. Can you lead me in any direction that can
help regarding using POSIX without the RM.EXE since I
do not have it? Unfortunately I know nothing about POSIX.

Thanks

You might try searching for cygwin which is rather easier to find, and when
installed provides a similar environment to a unix shell, which can
sometimes take care of things like this.

I had this happen as well. Something like 2000 subfolders
were created. You have to use the cmd window as in there
it will show the shorthand names of the parent folders
irregardless of the funny folder names they used. I cannot
remember the exact procedure I did but I was able to
delete the files but only through the cmd window
interface. Too be honest I think it was just a straight
del command. Try searching on 'how to delete folders with
special characters'....if I recall. Sorry can't be much
more help but perhaps this will get you going.

Here is a successful remedy.

I downloaded their "rmd.exe" and it easily
deleted the offending folders. I used it as
recommended for this purpose, which
was as "rm.exe". It is important to read
the docs, this is a powerful and dangerous
program if misused. You could wipe out
everything.
