I want to turn on Autoformat in Contact for phone #s to (###)###-#

The response posted several times to this question is:

All that is required for masking of phone numbers is to set your default
dialing location correctly for your operating system.

Can you explain where that is done?

It would depend on your operating system, of course, which you did not
mention.
For Windows XP it is in Control Panel > Phone and modem options...
