With XP, you reformat the main disk with the XP installation disk. (I am assuming you have a Dell XP
SP2 installation disk)
You put the disk in the CD drive and restart the computer.
(Most new PC's read from the CD before the hard drive, but check your BIOS to be sure.)
Skip the first offer to do a repair and follow the on screen prompts. A format of the drive will be
one of the options.
After the re-installation is complete start re-installing the hardware drivers. They recommend the
motherboard drivers first, but I like to do the video card first so that images of the screen are
not so large I can't see all of the option buttons.

Now, before you start:
Have you a Dell driver disk? Or have you downloaded drivers for your video card, modem,
motherboard, sound card, network card etc?
Have you backed up all of your personal files?
Have you backed up your address book, your favorites, your email messages, your Outlook Express
Account settings?
Do your have your original Program Disks for re-installation?

After backing up any data you wish to transfer to the new OS
installation, simply boot from the WinXP installation CD. You'll be
offered the opportunity to delete, create, and format partitions as part
of the installation process. (You may need to re-arrange the order of
boot devices in the PC's BIOS to boot from the CD.)

Then the backed up data can be restored and applications
re-installed from their original installation media.

i have the original, but it was bad.got a replacement but it is old.may not be
version 2. backed up quite a few files.got new drivers saved on external
drive.what else do i need to back up??

If the installation disk you got does not include SP2, you will want to download the SP2, or SP3,
program from Microsoft to update your computer as soon as you have it running. Without at least
SP2, you will not be able to install most Antivirus software.
