I know nothing about HTML or programming of any sort but after very
successfully putting some holiday photographs on the Web using JAlbum :

http://jalbum.net/

I am now encouraged to make a page to link my individual holiday pages
and add some other interesting text information and individual
photographs. Is there such an animal as a freeware wizard type program
that an HTML challenged oldie like me could understand and use without
inducing a heart attack?
My ISP allows me 10Mb but I have no idea what that would look like or
how many photographs I could upload within that limit how can I find out?

If you have Microsoft Office 2000 (and maybe above) you can save files
in html format - it's not free, of course. A freeware WYSIWYG html
editor is called Amaya:

Quite a few, I would have thought.

Use Explorer to see how big your picture files are. Total the file sizes
up - and if it comes to less than 10Mb, then you're a winner.

Ok, I'll start with the second part-
As far as the 10 mb limit goes, what I did was create a directory on my
computer and store everything going on the webpage there. That way, you
can tell at a glance (by right clicking and selecting properties)roughly
how large your page is. The way my ISP handles the limits is by
emailing me if I start to get close to the max allowed space. Your ISP
may have something similar.

Ok, the hard part: Choosing the right HTML editor. The Pricelessware
site has one listed that I tried called 1st Page 2000
http://www.evrsoft.com/1stpage2.shtml

What I liked about this was that it allows you to either start off with
the basic, intermediate, or advanced approach to webpage design. It
couldn't hurt to download it and try it out.

As far as actually learning HTML goes, I can only give you the advice I
give to everyone who asks me. Find an HTML editor you are comfortable
with and explore the heck out of it. Ask questions (look for webmaster
or webdesign newsgroups), and use google. There are many resources and
tutorials for beginers. In addition, you can also look at the source of
webpages you like to see how the webmaster created it.

Good luck

10 meg is good enough for a start,... but not what I would call a
great service execpt if it's free. Pictures shouls always be 72 dpi so
they take only 30 to 60 Kb,... so that's lotsa fotos on 10 meg...
You can find several links to free soft on my page

Even if you use a WYSIWYG editor, you should learn a little HTML
because there will be times that "what you get" is not "what you
really want."

There is a great free tutorial at
<http://www.mcli.dist.maricopa.edu/tut/> You can work it on-line or
download it.

It walks you through all of the basics and touches on some of the more
powerful features. Well worth the time.

There are some disputes about the 72dpi-thing, take a look at:
http://www.scantips.com/no72dpi.html, it might save even more space.

grtzBloned

It Read the text in full to understand that 72 dpi IS relevant when
you compare similar things... two (scanned) pics at the same size,..
i prefer to place it online in 72 dpi,.. not in 720 dpi.... but
hey,.. if you are a wizz, go ahead. Lotsa pleasure.
Greetz...

Of cource you make a point here,... no sweat.
The text was very entertaining,.. fully true... but nothing new.

I'm not a wizz, not at scanning or making webpages, and I didn't want to
make a point just thought you or someone else might be interested.

It could be there for ages, so it might be the same thing. When it comes to
webbuilding, scanning and dpi-yattayatta, my knowledge can be described in
one word: 'Huh?'

Always welcome.

Curious, I d/l and installed 1st Page 2000. During the install I was warned
by my virus scanner of some trojan or other (actually this happened twice);
I let the install finish and tried the app and it seemed ok. I then ran the
virus scanner over the Evrsoft directory, no hits. Tried Stinger, no hits.
Tried the AV over the whole C: disk, no hits.

Questions:
1.Anyone else get this?
2. Could this be what is called a false positive?

Thanks.

First PAge is a Very nice app for html.. I am wondering when the new feature
release date is (i remember reading about it earlier).. anyways, for the
question on the trojan/virus:

First Page installes not only the app, but it also installs a bunch of
scripts (from matts script archive?).. In-and-among the scripts is some
web-page bomber (if i remember right) which is a script that pops open a
window, and then repeats itself so, running the script will result in 100's
of windows open over a small period of time and cause the computer to
lock-up cause of all the popups.

You can delete the file, and there will be no problem (just you won't have
access to the script).

My guess is after you installed FPage, the antivirus poped up and possibly
deleted the file (or quarenteened it) automatically (thus the no finding the
virus on the second scan).

Good Luck, and have fun working on your webpage..

Before I close though.. If you are learning HTML, I strongly recomend that
you learn CSS (cascade style sheets).. they are the new way of webdesign,
and quite easy to figure out.. http://www.w3schools.com/css/css_examples.asp
has a list of commands and previews (with a realtime editor).

Good Luck
