I would like to disable zone.com games, but in a way that my son does not figure out that I have tweaked it. Any ideas? I am running Windows XP

Hi Devin,

If you want to restrict users from accessing online game sites
such as Zone.com you need to change their account type to
Limited User. This will cause the software to fail to register.

he's going to know u did something when he tries to get
on and can't.

Get a firewall and disable those ports.
I am not sure wich ones it uses does anyone else know?

Some games are Java applets. They might not use ports that could be blocked
without disabling the browser.

Disabling Java (not Javascript, dispite similar name two different things)
might be efective.

I suspect the main concern for many parents would be the lobby chats. The
chats might require a port, but I don't recall which one.

Until you can figure out something more sophisticated, how about a rule that
the browser history will be checked for the zone, and the history file
better not be cleared either?

Hi Robert,

Actually lobby chat can be turned on and off via a registry value now. :-)

Hi mzw7lm,

Zone lobbies use ports 28000 to 29100.

This is what I have done to stop ads and restrict access to
certan sites on the internet.

Look in the c:\windows\system32\drivers\etc directory. In
there you will find a file called host . open it with
wordpad. Add the following line:

0.0.0.0 www.zone.com

Save the file then make sure that it DOESN'T have a file
extension. He won't be able to goto that site.

If you goto www.alanofdale.net/download/hosts.zip unzip
this file into your c:\windows\system32\drivers\etc
directory. This will block access to over 70,000 different
ad and adult type sites.

Goodluck!!
