As you know, if it is necessary under Windows 98 to close alll the
programs which are running in the background (and I tends to have quite
a few), you have to press Ctrl-Alt-Del, select a program, then repeat
the process over and over again until all the programs are closed.

Is there any software available (Freeware if possible) which allows you
to select more than one program at a time, and thus speed up the whole
operation?

Go to any freeware download site and there will likely be several to
choose from. There was a popular one called "Enditall" that may still
be kicking around if you do a google search.

A lot of applications suggest that all other programs are shut down
during their installation process. Also I use Norton Utilities, which
doesn't seem to like other programs running whle it is diagnosing disk
problems.

1 word: "EndItAll". Or is that 3 words?

Remove "kins" from address to reply.

Try Stopit - Google search for it because i have lost the URL. But it works
well and is free

Thanks to everyone for their replies. I am currently trying out Enditall
version 1 on my home machine and version 2 at work, and both seem to do what
I want.

Process Viewer 2000

With Process Viewer 2000 for Windows 95/98 by Ble Enterprises you can view
all active processes (not only those listed in the 'ctrl-alt-del' window).
You can terminate ('Kill') each of the active processes, you can copy their
paths to the clipboard, you can view and change their priority, you can
register and unregister a process as a service, view their properties, etc.
If you have to terminate the same processes often, you can create a script.
When you double-click this script in explorer, PV2K will automatically kill
those processes.
