Hello everyone, l'm in desperate need of some assistance from one of you more learned inter-web folk. I've posted the following on _every_ techie site l could find, however no one has posted a solution to my problem... _PLEASE_ help me out with this, if you know what the problem is:

Hello, I've recently noticed a problem with my browser over the past few days. I'm using windows XP Pro (SP1) and browsing with iE6.0... Now then.. whenever I type an unknown URL, such as:
http://www.fasdfasdfasdfasfdasdfasf.com

I get redirected to an extremely annoying MSN search page:
http://search.msn.com/results.aspx?srch=104&FORM=AS4&q=http://www.fksfasdfasdfsadfsdafasdf.com/

Seems like this happens whenever l type an unknown URL, or mistype one. Simple enough, problem is... I don't want my computer to do this, and I can't for the life of me figure out how to remove this msn search "service" <groan>. Please help me figure out how to set my computer back to my old school "page cannot be found" error message, I really and stand this stupid "msn.search.com" garbage. __PLEASE__ post me some instructions on how this can be remedy, or some directions to a place that can.

Thanks for your time

Hi JoeSlime :-)
Hello everyone, l'm in desperate need of some assistance from one of
you more learned inter-web folk. I've posted the following on _every_
techie site l could find, however no one has posted a solution to my
problem... _PLEASE_ help me out with this, if you know what the
problem is:

It is likely you have parasites, spyware, adware, malware, or hijackware on
your system causing the problem, which your antivirus will not detect, as it
does not have the same definitions. Download and install, then you *MUST*
update the programs prior to running to be sure they have the latest
definitions, then run the programs below. They are free and very effective.
Be sure to run both SpyBot and Adaware, as what one does not detect the
other may. It is important that you do all
the steps and follow all directions carefully:

IMPORTANT:
Before trying to remove spyware using the programs below, download a copy of
LSPFIX from the URL below - some malware may kill your internet connection
when it is removed, this program will enable you to regain your connection.
http://www.cexx.org/lspfix.htm

It is important that you run the programs in the order that they are listed
here. The first three programs will clear your machine of all other items so
that you can have a clear HiJackThis Log for the experts to read and analyze
for you.

(NOTE: If you can not download these programs from the Internet, if your PC
has CD read capabilities, go to another computer with CD-ROM burning
capabilities. Create a folder on the hard drive of the other computer called
HOLD, download the programs to that folder, then burn that folder to a CD.
Copy the HOLD folder to your HD and then install the programs from there
and run them. After you have IE access again, update all programs where
possible to get the latest definitions and run them again to be sure there
are no lingering items on the system.

HiJackThis: - Free

Go to
http://computercops.biz/downloads-cat-14.html ,
or
http://www.aumha.org/a/parasite.php#hjt
and download HiJackThis. Unzip to a folder other than your Desktop or the
Temp folder, doubleclick HiJackThis.exe, and hit "Scan".

When the scan is finished, the "Scan" button will change into a "Save Log"
button. Press that, save the log some place you remember where it is.
Most of what it lists will be harmless or even required, so DO NOT fix
anything yet.

Open the copy of your log in NotePad and make a copy. Then you can go here
to post you log:

analyze the log and report back the results. Please allow at least a few
hours or a days time for a response, depending on when you post the log

Remember, you must return to the HJT site to get your answer. It is a good
idea to click the "Notify" box so that you will get an electronic
notification by e-mail to let you know when a response has been posted.
But, you must still return to the site of your answer

Hasn't anyone offered the standard spiel about scanning for
Spyware/malware/scumware? But before that, make sure you don't have a
program installed which prevents *you*, the user, from changing your Start
or Search page.

Also, just for some levity before the hard work begins, here are some for
you that you long to have in your face once again:

OK then, are you now relaxed, and have seen enough? Then let's get going;
Here's the spiel:
Quick and basic scans (hardly definitive, but a start)

Parasites, spyware malware basics:
http://aumha.org/a/parasite.htm
http://aumha.org/a/quickfix.htm

Check for Spyware - How - to's
First, install the respective programs and then update them immediately,
so that they have the current versions, and definitions. Read the Help
Files and Tutorials.
Run them one at a time. With Ad-Aware you may have it
generally clean whatever it finds. The same applies for CWShredder.
Spybot S&D requires special attention (listed below), as does HijackThis
(Only more so. Details listed below) The programs are listed in order of
their general strength, safety, and purpose. It is perhaps best to install
and run these in this order of appearance. All are freeware programs,
but if you are pleased with the results and quality of the utilities,
donations to the respective Authors are cheerfully accepted.

*Most important* - Before you try to remove spyware using any of the
following programs, realize that the process of cleaning and removing
certain spyware and malware may possibly interrupt and kill your internet
connection.
Therefore, you should obtain a copy of LSPFIX, which will then make it
possible for you to re-establish your internet connection should it be
terminated.

Download LSPFIX from either of the following sites:

http://www.cexx.org/lspfix.htm
http://www.spychecker.com/program/winsockxpfix.html (For Win2k or XP)
Another thing to consider doing is to run a program (only run one program
at a time) a few times consecutively. The reason for this is that the first
pass may kill certain Spyware programs, but may not be able to terminate
and kill all files and programs which may be running at the time.
That is why a second pass > may be necessary to be thoroughly effective.

Also, under the most stubborn cases, running the programs in Safe-Mode
will allow for the best cleaning conditions, as there will be a minimum of
interference from processes running in the background.

I'll also add that you should scan and re-scan under all conditions *several
times* until your PC comes up clean. Also, you should try re-booting in
between scans as well. AND, you should do this by what is referred to as a
"clean-boot" environment *in addition* to the conventional methods, until
you come up clean.

This item below is designed to *prevent* installation of malware and the
like by comparing known CLSID's of these "bad guys" with what is in its
definitions. By enabling a *Kill Bit* it prevents known malignant ActiveX
from being installed or run on your machine. It doesn't remove anything,
nor will it fix anything that is already in your PC. Rather, it will prevent
installation or re-installation of the item once it has been removed
either > manually, or by the use of another program which will perform
the duty of removing the spyware.

If you use Spybot S & D, be sure to clean *ONLY* the items displayed in
*RED*. DO NOT clean any items displayed in Black or Green at this time.

Lastly there is HijackThis. Hijack this is a very powerful, last resort
type of program which is generally best used in conjunction with help from
those > who deal with the findings of the log created by the HijackThis scan.
It does nothing in the scan itself; it merely says what is in and running on
your PC. The items must be checked-marked to be "cleaned". You must
know *exactly* what you are checking-off before you proceed.
If you don't, you can quite possibly disable many useful and vital functions
of your PC. Remember; read the Tutorials, and seek help at SpywareInfo
Forums, Net-Integration, or TomCoyote forums for safety's sake.
