I want a working mobo (not another dead a7n8x)

I've had 2 Asus a7n8x mobo's so far, brand new, and they both have
failed to work.
Can someone recommend a mobo for the same price (~ £100) which works
with Athlon XP2700. Something from a company which produces
motherboards which actually work would be nice.

both From the same company? The A7N8X's are pretty solid.

How is your power supply?

The Epox Nforce2's are also good.

Those are usually solid boards. The Abit NF7-S is a good one as well.

i have an aopen case/cpu. 300w psu. the first one blew!!! i got a
replacement and no output on monitor. so i send the mobo/cpu back. now
the human speech bios startup test says `failed ram check`. the ram is
fine. tried all 3 slots, plus another stick of working ram. can't be
arsed wasting more time on a third board, so i`ll try another brand.
 
I have been researching the A7N8X delux board and I have found that it
is rather difficult to find straight out recommendations from ASUS
that one can find easily....the ram they recommend....seems to be
brand new rams....however....I guess any non-ECC....184
pin....unbuffered....Cl=2 (they actually want 2.5).......333 mhz or
400 mhz will do....but I am not sure...

See their QVL (Qualified Vendors List) then good luck in finding
them...

I say all this because some people have had trouble with this board
and Ram maybe why. I am thinking of building a comp using this
Motherboard.

nForce2 boards have a bug regarding memory, that they require memory
"capable" of timings faster than what the board is trying to run. It
is a known issue with the nForce2 chipset, not really with any
particular motherboard though it's possible some manufacturers are
toying around with the BIOS to set more conservative settings
regardless of what the SPD dictates or user selects. The next issue
is then if memory manufacturers are accurately rating the memory or
taking nForce2-related RMA into account and underrating the memory.

Because memory quality, yield, can and does change, the best course is
to do a lot of research right when you're ready to buy the memory,
visit forums and buyer feedback areas like at http://www.newegg.com
and you may get a better idea if others have had good results with
brand X, type Y memory, even the particular production lot being sold
at a given vendor. At worst just buy from someplace with a good
return policy.

Look on the net - i'm not the only one having trouble with this board!

I'm using pc3200 ram. that should work, as it does in other boards.
and ram from machines which have been running for months doesn't work
in my board. i only have so much patience!! will look into some other
boards as recommended in this thream (thanks to all who have helped).
